Cecult - Research Center in Social History of Culture

In August 1995, as part of the process of institutionalization of research groups in the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences of UNICAMP, a group of teachers from the Department of History created the Internal Center for Research in Popular Culture - CECULT. In July 1997, CECULT began to be called Research Center on Social History of Culture, responding to an extension of the thematic scope of its concerns.
The main objective of this Research Center is to stimulate and sustain reflection on the experiences of workers throughout Brazil's history: their practices and forms of expression, the meanings they have given to different aspects of their daily lives, and the ways in which they saw themselves and have been seen by other subjects in specific historical situations. Researchers of the Center are interested in investigating these themes in the workplace or in spaces of sociability and leisure, in the unfolding of conflicts with masters, patrons or public authorities or even in moments in which identities and solidarities became more present.

International Institute of Social History (IISH)

Why has work been valued and compensated in very different ways over the past five centuries? Why do people’s working conditions vary so widely from slavery to well-paid wage labour? And how can people individually or collectively influence these conditions? Hoping to answer these questions, the IISH is working closely with researchers on other continents to gather and analyse data about social and economic changes all over the world since 1500. This concerns labour relations, individual life cycles, survival strategies, and collective actions, as well as time series of wages, prices, productivity, gender relations, life expectancies, and literacy.
The work and labour relations perspective is essential to discover how inequality comes about and is perpetuated, within and between societies. Through this research, the Institute aims to contribute to current social discussions about social inequality, economic growth, the environment, globalization, migration, and democracy.
