RULES

PEDRO LAINS AWARD 2024

Awarded paper:

The Jury of the APHES 2024 Prize has decided to award the prize to the paper entitled “The denomination-terroir link: Portugal’s interests in international conferences for the protection of industrial property (1883-1934)” by Pedro Almeida Leitão.

Pedro Almeida Leitão is a collaborating researcher at CITCEM and holds a PhD in History from FLUP, with the thesis Trademarks in Portugal (1883-1933). He has studied the relationship between brands, advertising and the press. At the same time, he is researching the commercial dynamics of the Port wine sector in the 19th and 20th centuries. She also has an academic background in Economics and Marketing.

Report of the jury:

The grounds for the award were as follows:

  • This is a very well framed analysis in the international literature relevant to the study of the protection of industrial property and protected designations of origin in the context of the explosive growth of international trade in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century;
  • It is a highly relevant topic for the economic history of the 19th and 20th centuries;
  • It is a text that demonstrates the weaknesses of that literature and puts forward an alternative interpretation that is suggestive and promising for new developments;
  • It is a text that manages to highlight the possibilities of using non-primary sources for the study of Economic History, placing, in this case, a greater emphasis on theoretical interpretation in comparison with more empirically based analyses;
  • It is a very well-structured paper that is presented with great clarity and makes an undoubted contribution to the field.–

AWARDED PAPER:

The jury of the APHES award 2017 has decided to attribute the award to the paper “Un récit historique alternatif sur l’indépendance des banques centrales: la doctrine et les pratiques avant la théorie ou l’art avant la science”, by Adriano do Vale.

REPORT OF THE JURY:

The reasons for awarding the paper were the following:

  • The paper is very well structured and presented with great clarity, resulting in an important contribution to the field in which it is inserted

APHES 2016

CONFERENCE PAPER AWARDED:

The Scientific Committee decided unanimously to attribute the 2016 APHES Award to the paper presented by Hélder Carvalhal (CIDEHUS, U- Évora), entitled “Exércitos privados em Portugal na primeira metade de quinhentos: o caso de estudo da hoste senhorial do Infante D. Luís (c. 1530-1555)”.

JURY’S REPORT:

The Scientific Committee made this decision highlighting the following aspects:

  • The rigour and originality in the manipulation of an empirical basis difficult to manage and the use of which was time-consuming;
  • The attempt at quantification of the dimension of an army of a noble household (Prince Dom Luís) and of the number of pieces of weaponry;
  • The relevance of the study to the substantiated understanding of the sixteenth-century military revolution, and its contribution to the opening of interpretative paths that allow us to place Portugal within the international historiographical map, through the comparison with processes of military revolution that occurred in other states or political units;
  • The originality and pertinence of the topic, the quality of the theoretical and problematizing foundations presented, as well as the quality of the narrative. These are made clear in the way in which the paper weaves the threads together, by the attention it gives to the questions of the readers, and by the way in which the attention to details enriches the arguments and foundations of the conclusions.

APHES 2013

CONFERENCE PAPER AWARDED:

Torsten Arnold, “The Indo-Portuguese commerce in the sixteenth century: revision of the copper-pepper trade and the Carreira da Índia”.

JURY PANEL REPORT:

The jury panel justifies its decision on the attribution of the prize by the originality and relevancy of the work, the quality of the theoretical argumentation, as well as the narrative presented. The work is well written and structured, with a high degree of attention paid to details, such as the interrogations that the reader might have, demonstrating an attention to detail that enriches its conclusions.

APHES 2012

CONFERENCE PAPER AWARDED:

Nuno Pedro Gonçalves Palma (UNL-FE), “Spending a Windfall: American Precious Metals and Euro-Asian Trade 1492-1807”

JURY PANEL REPORT:

“The winning conference paper went the farthest in its choice of a wide-ranging theme, based on a study in which we can find many surprises, structured in an exemplary way, and with a high degree of methodological innovation. (…) This conference paper argues that monetary injections recurring from exploring silver and gold from South America were the main driving forces of the development of commerce between Europe and Asia during Modern Age (1492-1807). This conclusion is based on a model that translates monetary shocks in the international commercial system, allowing the measure of the real impact as well as the counterfactual possibility of not having that same monetary impact.”

CONFERENCE PAPER AWARDED:

“ Os Capitulares da Sé de Coimbra (1620-1670)”, Hugo Daniel Ribeiro da Silva da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto.

JURY PANEL REPORT:

The award-winning paper is a well researched and structured work that brings new insights regarding its topic.
It is clearly written, as well as being precise.
The documentation that is the subject of analysis is not only the correct one, but it is also clear that an attempt was made to diversify its sources, triangulating elements from different sources.
The work meets the objectives proposed, with the additional merit of being able to work on a theme that has been neglected by recent historiography in the period researched.
The author questions in an exemplary fashion its own results, contextualising them and showcasing maturity in the critical evaluation of the data, a particularly important attitude in an early career researcher and demonstrating the potentialities of its work.

CONFERENCE PAPERS AWARDED:

Ana Paula Soares Pires, “A Indústria de Moagem de Cereais. Sua Organização e Reflexos Políticos do seu Desenvolvimento durante a I República, 1899-1929”

JURY PANEL REPORT:

The work by Ana Paula Soares Pires, “A Indústria de Moagem de Cereais. Sua Organização e Reflexos Políticos do seu Desenvolvimento durante a I República, 1899-1929”, makes an important contribution to the knowledge of the evolution of the sector, of the policies, as well as the conflicts and alliances related to bread between the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the 30’s in the XX century. The work is well presented, with the correct structure, taking care to clearly define the object of analysis and problematise it. It further benefits from the adequacy of its sources and bibliography. To the author, it must be recognised the time spent in documenting information, duly accompanied by an excellent analysis as well as interpretation. Finally, the importance of the annexes at the end of the work should be highlighted, constituting, in their own right, important research instruments.

João de Figueirôa Rêgo, “Reflexos de um Poder Discreto. Discurso Académico, Saberes e Práticas Sociais no Portugal Setecentista a Propósito dos Códices de Dom Flamínio.”

JURY PANEL REPORT:

The work by João de Figueirôa Rêgo, “Reflexos de um Poder Discreto. Discurso Académico, Saberes e Práticas Sociais no Portugal Setecentista a Propósito dos Códices de Dom Flamínio”, has as its objective the contextualisation of genealogy knowledge and its articulation with the discourses and social mores of the XVIII century. It analysis a number of texts on genealogy by D. Flamínio, a Saint Augustine Canon.
The work is able to problematise its topic in a mature and reflective way, taking into consideration the available academic contributions, enumerating the existing gaps, without hesitating to correct or propose new interpretations in light of new found documents. A well-structured dissertation, anchored in the relevant documentation, revealing a solid knowledge of the concepts in the social history academic field. It compiles and works with new information in an innovative way, reflecting the problems that might arise from this new information, and adds something of importance to the Portuguese historiography of the topic’s work.

CONFERENCE PAPER AWARDED:

Nuno Miguel da Silva Campos, “Redes sociais: D. Pedro de Meneses e a construção da Casa de Vila Real (1415-1437)”, Universidade de Évora.

JURY PANEL REPORT:

This thesis has as its object of analysis the political and social life of D. Pedro de Menezes, founder of the Vila Real House.
It can be considered part of the field of the History of Social Power, and it is built on the basis of the analysis of social networks, following the anglo-saxon anthropological model.
The structure of the work is built on top of the analysis on the strategies of conquest and consolidation of political power and social status used by D. Pedro de Meneses and which made it possible for him the become captain and regent of Ceuta and Count of Vila Real.
Regarding the construction of the thesis itself, it is important to highlight the global quality of the work presented, justifying the award:

  • A rigorous definition of the topic, and structuring the work in relation to a well-defined investigation programme.
  • Clear presentation of the methodological and theoretical models used.
  • Elaboration of a state-of-the-art in the academic field on the topic of the work, as well as the integration of critical bibliography.
  • The innovation in the treatment of a topic traditionally confined to Political History.
